How Much Is Your
Dripping Tap Costing?

A tap that drips once per second wastes around 31 litres per day — over 11,000 litres a year. At SA Water's rates, that's a meaningful addition to your water bill before you've even turned a tap on intentionally. Select your drip rate to see the true cost:

Should You Repair or
Replace Your Tap?

Most tap faults are simple and inexpensive to repair — a new washer or cartridge costs very little and takes our plumbers just a few minutes. Replacement makes more sense when:

The tap body is damaged or corroded. Surface corrosion or a cracked tap body can't be repaired by replacing internal components — the whole unit needs to go.

Parts are unavailable. Older or obscure tap brands sometimes have discontinued parts. A full replacement may be the only practical option.

Multiple faults simultaneously. A tap that needs a new washer, O-ring, cartridge and handle at the same time is often more cost-effectively replaced than repaired component by component.

You want to upgrade. If the tap is functional but old, some homeowners choose to upgrade while the plumber is there — we can supply and install a quality replacement at the same time.

We'll always give you an honest recommendation on site — we don't push replacements when a repair is the right answer.

We tell you what's wrong and the fixed cost to repair or replace before we start. No guesswork, no surprise invoices.
3
Repair or Replace

Common questions

Tap Repair FAQs

Absolutely. A slow drip can waste 5,000–15,000 litres of water per year, and on SA Water's tiered pricing that adds meaningfully to your bill. The repair itself is typically inexpensive and quick — in most cases the cost is recovered in water savings within a few months. It's also worth noting that in South Australia, you may have a legal obligation to repair a dripping tap promptly as a property owner.
Technically you can replace a tap washer yourself on a standard tap — it's not complicated. However, in South Australia, any work on the water supply system beyond turning a tap on and off is required to be carried out by a licensed plumber under state plumbing regulations. DIY tap repairs also risk damaging the tap seat, which turns a cheap washer replacement into a more significant job.
Traditional washer taps (compression taps) use a rubber washer pressed against a brass seat to stop the flow — these eventually wear and drip. Ceramic disc taps use two precision-ground ceramic discs that slide against each other — they're more durable and less likely to drip but can develop faults if grit enters the cartridge or the ceramic chips. We repair and replace both types.
Yes, in many cases handles can be replaced independently. The challenge is matching to the existing tap body — older taps can be difficult to source handles for. When we assess the tap, we'll advise whether a handle replacement is viable or whether a full tap swap is more practical.
Yes — we install new tapware for renovations as well as repairs. If you've purchased taps you'd like installed, we can supply the labour and ensure everything is compliant. If you'd like us to supply the tapware as well, we can discuss options on site.
