What To Do If You
Smell Gas Right Now
A gas leak is a life-safety emergency. Natural gas and LPG are both highly flammable — a spark from any electrical source can cause ignition. Follow these steps immediately:

Don't operate any switches or appliances
This includes light switches, mobile phones, doorbells and power points. Any electrical spark is a potential ignition source. Leave switches as they are — don't turn anything on or off.

Evacuate the building immediately
Get everyone — including pets — out of the building. Leave doors open as you exit to allow gas to disperse. Do not re-enter until cleared by a licensed gas fitter or emergency services.

Turn off the gas at the meter if safe to do so
If you can safely access the gas meter without going back inside, turn the supply valve to the off position. The valve is off when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe.

Call us and your gas provider from outside
Once you are a safe distance away, call us on 0468 280 017. Also contact your gas provider — Elgas (LPG) on 13 11 61 or contact your natural gas retailer. For life-threatening emergencies call 000.

The connection is typically a straightforward and affordable job for a licensed gas fitter.
A gas compliance certificate (also called a certificate of compliance) is issued by the licensed gas fitter after completing notifiable gas work, confirming the installation meets all relevant standards. You need one when selling a property with a gas installation, for rental properties (landlords are legally required to maintain gas safety), and as part of new gas installation work. We issue compliance certificates for all applicable work.
Gas flexible hoses connecting appliances have a recommended lifespan of 5 years, after which they should be inspected and replaced if showing any signs of wear, cracking, corrosion or kinking. Many house fires involving gas appliances are caused by aged flexible hoses that have failed. If your hoses are more than 5 years old, ask us to inspect them when we're next on site.
